Natural ingredients are perceived as healthy, but they are composed of chemical substances. For example, vitamin C is ascorbic acid, table salt is sodium chloride, and white vinegar is water and acetic acid.

A natural ingredient is a chemical compound that comes from the plant, mineral, animal, or microbial kingdom. It is obtained through physical extraction processes (pressure, for example), without any transformation of its constituents, such as virgin vegetable oils obtained by first pressing. Or, they are obtained from a transformation of a plant ingredient, such as hyaluronic acid obtained from sugar fermentation.

Our naturally sourced ingredients are obtained through processes that respect the environment, biodiversity, minimize energy, use ecological solvents, and generate minimal waste.

An ingredient is commonly called "chemical" when it is synthetically obtained. Synthetic processes help control the purity of the ingredient. In the case of a natural ingredient that undergoes no transformation, greater variability in its properties, such as composition, color, or smell, is possible.

In the cosmetic industry, we turn to chemistry to produce active molecules whose natural resources are depleted or found in small quantities in nature, such as vanillin or vitamin C.

The use of these chemically transformed ingredients also helps preserve biodiversity by chemically replicating a natural molecule without having to exploit it. Examples include synthetic fragrances, which can avoid the allergens found in natural ones, or peptides, which can replicate substances found in our skin, such as amino acids. At Farma Dorsch, when we resort to synthesis, we demand that the principles of Green Chemistry be applied in obtaining these ingredients, ensuring that they are environmentally friendly and do not contain toxic residues.

Synthetic ingredient, natural ingredient: is one safer than the other?

Chemistry is commonly associated with artificial or synthetic. This association reinforces preconceived ideas: chemicals are harmful while natural is good! This statement is completely false. Natural is far from synonymous with health or safety. In fact, the most dangerous poisons are found in nature, such as animal venoms or those from poisonous plants like foxglove or hemlock. The chemical transformation of a material allows for better control of its quality and reproducibility, thus limiting impurities. In nature, the quality of natural ingredients varies depending on the climate, surrounding fields, or impurities that may have infiltrated.

Finally, it is also scientifically well known that it is the dose that makes the poison. Like all types of ingredients, a natural ingredient, such as sugar or salt, can be dangerous if used in the wrong dose.

All our products formulated with natural or non-natural ingredients are subject to a strict safety assessment for humans and the environment, taking into account the conditions of use: utilization, frequency, and dosage of the ingredients.
