As we mentioned in another post, and whenever we explain our formulas, not all cosmetic ingredients are beneficial for your skin. Why Avoid These Ingredients? The Science Behind Our Decisions
Some ingredients approved by authorities have a worse toxicological profile and therefore have usage restrictions. We try to avoid or minimize their use, such as essential oils or perfumes with allergens.
- Formaldehydes. The WHO has already declared them “officially carcinogenic” and their use in cosmetics is prohibited, but there are cosmetic ingredients that can release them.
- Mineral oils, such as paraffin, petrolatum. Due to their petrochemical origin, they are obtained from non-renewable sources, are not biodegradable, and have no affinity with the skin's components, potentially occluding pores.
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. It is used as a cleansing agent and is a surfactant that makes bath products more foamy. It is not a PEG, but it has an ethoxylated part in its structure. It can alter the barrier due to its aggressiveness, causing irritation, and traces or impurities of 1,4-dioxane may appear.
- Phthalates. What is concerning about them is their endocrine-disrupting capacity. They are part of the ingredients in some nail products and some perfumes.
- Parabens. Until 2004, they were the most widely used preservatives. And since 2014, the European Union has banned longer-chain parabens, such as butylparaben and isobutylparaben. Subjected to evaluations for their possible endocrine-disrupting action).
- Triclosan. It is used in some antiperspirant deodorants, cleansers, and hand sanitizers. It is suspected of being an endocrine disruptor.
- Polyethylene Glycol Compounds (PEG). It is known that when using ethylene oxide in their production, they produce an impurity: 1,4-dioxane, which is a known carcinogen. They can be recognized in the list as PEG*- Polysorbate- (20, 30, 80,…), Sodium Laureth Sulfate and ingredients ending in -eth, such as CETEARETH-X, Laureth-X, Steareth-X).
- Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT). Antioxidants. They are suspected carcinogens.
- Phenylenediamine. It is only used in some hair dyes. In general, synthetic colorants have very problematic toxicological structures as aniline derivatives, and are related to carcinogenicity or endocrine disruption.
- Diethanolamine (DEA, MEA or TEA). These are chemicals used to create foam or regulate pH. What is concerning about them is their ability to form nitrosamines under certain circumstances.
- Phthalates. What is concerning about them is their endocrine-disrupting capacity. They are part of the ingredients in some nail products and some perfumes.
- Siloxanes. They are hidden in ingredients ending in "siloxane", some of which, like cyclopentasiloxane, cyclomethicone, are associated with an environmental toxicity risk due to not being biodegradable and being persistent in the environment.
