Are you using safe cosmetics? Learn about the ingredients that take care of your skin and the planet.
Have you ever wondered what's in your cosmetics and how it affects your health and the environment?
Cosmetic products marketed in the European Union must comply with very strict regulations to guarantee consumer safety. At FARMA DORSCH, we have over 40 years of experience developing and manufacturing products that meet these requirements. However, since our beginnings, we have also aimed to make a more restrictive selection of the ingredients in our formulas, based on scientific backing for their efficacy and taking into account their assessment from the perspective of toxicity and environmental impact.
Our goal is to create cosmetics with the most effective ingredients for skin care and health and to explain the reasons for this selection to our customers so that they can choose their cosmetic products in an informed, conscious, and responsible manner.
In 2016, we obtained the first certification for one of our products with the American non-profit organization Environmental Working Group (EWG™), increasingly recognized by consumers for its initiative in creating a database with expert evaluations of each ingredient authorized for cosmetic use. We and our children are highly exposed to cosmetic ingredients in our daily lives: shampoo, shower gel, toothpaste, moisturizers, etc. It is important to consider, therefore, that the consequences of repetitive misuse of an ingredient lead to overexposure, which can cause significant health risks for people with a deficient immune system.
How are ingredient evaluations carried out?
Ingredient evaluations are classified into three categories: Low risk, moderate, and high.
The availability of data is also taken into account, as safety is greater for ingredients that have been used longer compared to those used less.
In summary, the concerns taken into account are:
- Health risks: for example, those linked according to certain studies to cancer, some type of effect on development and reproduction, the immune system manifesting as allergic reactions, endocrine alterations, or those that may affect at a cellular or biochemical level, leading to health implications.
- Environmental impact risks: for example, persistence and bioaccumulation in the environment, ecotoxicity to wildlife such as fish and plants, or processes involved in their production that entail environmental pollution.
In FARMA DORSCH products, you will find a percentage of "Clean Ingredients." With this indicator, we transparently and reliably convey the total proportion of ingredients with a 1-2 "Low Hazard" rating in the final product.
Practically all of our ingredients are of natural origin, sustainably obtained, omitting any animal-derived products.
And what is the missing percentage?
These are ingredients that have an "intermediate or moderate" rating; they are not considered 1-2 because they have usage restrictions (maximum dosage), there might be a risk of causing allergies, some cases of irritation, etc. Among them, for example, are preservatives, fragrances, sunscreens, or the famous Retinol, which has usage restrictions due to being photo-unstable.
At FARMA DORSCH, we take extreme care with these ingredients, using, for example, preservatives approved by COSMOS® and ECOCERT® for natural cosmetics and food, and so-called multifunctional active ingredients (moisturizers, antioxidants, etc.) that allow us to minimize the use of preservatives.
