Photoprotectors for albino people
A solidarity initiative in Tanzania
In 2012, Farma Dorsch developed the first specific sunscreen formulation for people with albinism. This initiative, aimed at the production unit of the NGO Africa Directo in Tanzania, seeks to improve the quality of life of the albino population in the country.
The challenge of albinism in Tanzania
Albinism is a hereditary disease that affects approximately 17,000 Tanzanians, a prevalence significantly higher than in Europe. People with albinism in Tanzania face not only health risks, such as skin cancer, but also discrimination and violence due to superstitions. In 2008, 40 albinos were killed due to beliefs related to black magic.
Support and collaboration initiatives
Aware of these challenges, the NGO África Directo has worked for over a decade on projects seeking to improve the health and dignity of people with albinism. In collaboration with the Madrid-based dermocosmetic laboratory Fridda Dorsch, initiatives have been developed to regenerate the skin and boost the self-esteem of albinos, including product donations and the creation of the first sunscreen production unit in Tanzania.

Project impact and achievements
In February 2012, the Regional Dermatology Training Centre (RDTC) opened in Moshi, with the goal of developing specific products for albino skin care. A study involving 1,500 albinos in three regions of northern Tanzania led to the development of the definitive formula for Kilimanjaro Suncare sunscreens. The first local production of these sunscreens began in December 2012, showing significant improvements in the participants' skin.
Campaigns and training
In addition to support from Farma Dorsch, the Community of Madrid, the Association of Dermatologists at the Ramón y Cajal Hospital, and the asset management company Bestinver have funded the training of local surgeons and provided educational scholarships so that albino children can access jobs that don't require sun exposure. África Directo has also launched the "Put Yourself in Their Skin" campaign to generate funds by distributing sunscreen in Spanish pharmacies. The collaboration between Farma Dorsch, Africa Direct, and other organizations has had a significant impact on the lives of albinos in Tanzania, improving their health and providing hope for a more dignified and secure future.
