In 2012, Farma Dorsch developed the first specific formulation of photoprotectors for albino people, destined for the production unit of the NGO Africa Directo in Tanzania. The Community of Madrid, the Association of Dermatologists of the Ramón y Cajal Hospital and the asset manager Bestinver also participate in the project, financing the training of local surgeons to operate on skin cancer, as well as educational scholarships so that albino children have access to jobs that do not require sun exposure.
Albinism is an inherited disease. Tanzania is one of the countries with the highest prevalence of albinism in the world. About 17,000 Tanzanians suffer from it, representing 1 in 4,000 inhabitants, compared to 1 in 20,000 in Europe.
In addition to all the harsh symptoms of the disease and the serious risk of contracting skin cancer, they are discriminated against and excluded from society, having great difficulties for social integration. Superstitions consider the albino as a source of income to perform black magic, for which they suffer aggressions (40 murders of albinos in 2008).
In many cases, they are not allowed access to schooling, forcing them to graze in the open air. This causes extreme sun exposure that results in the appearance of skin tumors at a very early age. Specifically, 100% of albinos in Tanzania develop actinic keratosis before the age of 20, as well as other skin tumors (basal cell and spinocellular carcinomas) that reduce their life expectancy by 50%.
The NGO AFRICA DIRECTO, aware of the great problem of the Tanzanian albinos to survive in these brutal circumstances, began more than 10 years ago to implement a project to help albinos, to restore their dignity as persons and improve their health in all aspects.
